Nollywood veteran Ibrahim Chatta has broken his silence over his continued exclusion from the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), saying he is unfazed by the snub and not particularly interested in chasing validation through such platforms.
The 2025 AMVCA ceremony, held at Eko Hotel and Suites on May 10, celebrated many of the film industry’s brightest stars — but once again, Chatta was missing from the nominee list, sparking discussions across social media.
Appearing as a guest on the "Curiosity Made Me Ask” podcast hosted by comedian and skit maker Isbae U, the award-winning Yoruba actor addressed the long-running question: why has he never been recognised by one of Africa’s most prestigious entertainment awards?
“I ask myself that same question,” Chatta said frankly. “But I’m not interested. If I really wanted it, I would have submitted my film.”
The seasoned performer, who also runs a film village, hinted that his perceived low social media presence may be the reason award organisers overlook him, assuming he would not show up for the ceremony.
“Young people attend and win, but that doesn’t mean those of us who are not always online aren’t doing great work,” he added.
In a firm rebuttal to the narrative that he lacks recognition, Chatta reeled off some of the accolades already sitting on his shelf — including an international award, a prestigious honour from Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka, and another from colleague Odunlade Adekola, who personally awarded Chatta for his exceptional contributions to the craft.
“Do you know how many awards I have in my house?” he asked rhetorically. “I don’t pray for what I’m not interested in. The day I care, I’ll make a proper submission.”
Despite being hailed as one of the most versatile actors in Yoruba cinema, Chatta’s name has yet to appear on an AMVCA nomination list — a fact many fans have considered an injustice.
Still, the actor maintains that his passion for storytelling outweighs the glitz of red carpets or trophies. “True recognition,” he implied, “comes from the audience and the legacy of the work.”
