
The police in Ogun have arrested a 70-year-old woman, her son and two others for alleged armed robbery in Abeokuta, the state capital.
The septuagenarian, Moninola Lateef was arrested along with the gang members for allegedly assisting her 35-year-old son, Modiu Lateef who sustained gunshot injuries during an operation, to get treatment from a herbalist.
The 70-year-old woman and the gang of suspected armed robbers said to have been terrorising Abeokuta, the state capital for some time were arrested by SARS operatives on Tuesday.
Parading the suspects, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi told newsmen that Modiu Lateef, 35; Wale Okukenu, 30 and; 28-year-old Fatai Osho had been on the wanted list of the police and were eventually tracked down by the men of SARS.
Adejobi said that a locally made pistol was recovered from the members of the robbery gang.
He however said that septuagenarian Moninola Lateef, who is the mother to one of the suspects, Modiu Lateef was arrested along with the robbery suspects for allegedly taking her son to a herbalist for treatment to extract the bullets and pellets lodged in his body when he was shot during a robbery operation.
Adejobi added that the 70-year-old woman would soon be charged along with the three robbery suspects to court.
In a related development, the police in Ogun have arrested a five-man gang of kidnappers who have been terrorising residents of Ijebu area of the state for allegedly abducting a man who just returned to the country from abroad.
Three members of the kidnap gang who claimed to be Christian clerics, while the fourth said to be a herbalist were said to have deceived their victim with an offer of spiritual assistance for certain personal problem he was having.
The fifth member of the gang was said to have lost his during an exchange of fire with the police at their hideout.
The police recovered one locally made pistol loaded with cartridges and one Cherokee jeep with registration number. LND 25 CE from the suspects.
Parading the suspects, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi said that members of the gang were arrested on Tuesday at Ita-Marun, Ijebu Ode by men of the State Anti-Robbery Squad led by the Officer-in-Charge, Tijani Mohammed.
Adejobi identified the suspects as Ganiyu Olaiya, Segun Makanjuola, Bisi Akinleye and Bayo Adekunle.
The police spokesman said that the suspects kidnapped their victim who had just returned from after tricking him into their hideout.
