A Nigerian Police officer, Immariagbe Elemora, has disowned his wife’s five-month pregnancy, claiming that he is not responsible for it.

Elemora has accused his wife, Favour, of getting pregnant for another man and for this reason, dragged her to Alimoso Grade ‘B’ Customary Court, Igando, to dissolve their marriage, saying he can no longer live with a woman who is carrying another man’s pregnancy.

The embattled husband told the court presided over by Mr. Eko, that they have a 17-month old boy and he did not have any segxwal intercourse with her estranged wife recently, only to discover that she was pregnant.

He insisted that the marriage should be dissolved, telling the court that if he ever had any affair with the woman while carrying another man’s baby, his ancestors should kill him.

“The cause of the quarrel is the pregnancy. She suddenly took ill and I took her to the hospital and from the test, it was discovered that she was suffering from typhoid and malaria. I did not know how the pregnancy came about,” he narrated.

He told the court the implication of continuing to live with her, saying, “if I do that, my ancestors will strike me dead,” adding that he no longer loved her.

In her response, Favour told the court that her husband was responsible for the pregnancy.

Explaining, she said that immediately she got pregnant, her husband took her to an antenatal clinic but he stopped suddenly, claiming that she was impregnated by another man.

The woman insisted that the pregnancy belongs to her husband, adding that she still loves the man because he is the father of his children.

The court cautioned both parties about their claims and counter claims and asked them to be patient as the matter progresses, adding that a pregnancy test may be conducted to determine the paternity of the baby.

They were advised to maintain the peace since the matter was before the court and asked to come with their relations in the next adjournment on 5 January, 2010.
