Sterling performances by Nigerian youngsters, Kelechi Iheanacho and Alex Iwobi have earned the duo nominations for the 2016 Golden Boy awards.
The award is given to the most outstanding young player in Europe.
The players have been outstanding for their clubs since their promotion to the first team last season, and have also had impressive starts to the new campaign. The award was founded by Italian newspaper, Tuttosport, in 2003. Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero and Paul Pogba are past winners, while Manchester United’s Anthony Martial claimed the prize last year. Iheanacho’s Manchester City are currently flying high this season, and are yet to lose a game with the 19-year-old already contributing goals for the Citizens both in the Premier League and in the Champions League. Iwobi’s Arsenal have also had great shows in recent weeks, having started the season with a home loss to Liverpool. The Nigerian international returned from injury to reclaim his spot as a first team regular for the Gunners. Other players nominated for the award are Dele Alli, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Marko Grujic and Leroy Sane. Other notable names include Milan’s Gianluigi Donnarumma, Borussia Dortmund’s Ousmane Dembele and Bayern Munich’s Kingsley Coman and Renato Sanches. More Premier League interest comes in the form of Leicester’s Demarai Gray, Chelsea’s Andreas Christensen Nathan, on loan at Vitesse, and City’ Olivier Ntcham, on loan at Genoa.
