REACTION: MAINTAINING TOP

Carlo Ancelotti has warned not to expect high scores every week and was happy with his side's 2-0 win over a defensive Stoke today.
The Italian admitted it wasn't the Blues' best performance, especially as it came off the back of consecutive 6-0 wins, and he cited a slow tempo as the reason we only netted twice, a respectful score in any Premier League game.
'I am happy when we are able to do our best,' said Ancelotti. 'Today was not our best performance; there was a lot of difficulty in the game.
'We didn't have a high tempo in the game and we conceded a lot of throw-ins so the tempo couldn't get high.
'But I am happy because we won, we didn't concede a goal, we maintained a clean sheet and we maintained the top of the table.'
Stoke played plenty of defensive football, with Chelsea attacking the visitors' box for most of the first-half.
Chelsea produced plenty of chances on goal during the first period but failed to prosper until Florent Malouda struck a John Terry ball over Sorensen and into the net.
'The first-half was the better performance,' added Ancelotti. 'We had opportunities to score more than once.
'The second-half was more difficult but this can happen. We worked very hard this week because it is the week before the international break and then the start of the Champions League.
'So the players had a very tough week and they were not so sharp.'
Stoke manager Tony Pulis was happy with his side's performance: 'They worked their socks off and we had our moments,' he said.
'If Whelan's shot had gone in it would have been an interesting final 18 minutes.
'We haven't played too bad this season, we played really well against Tottenham but overall Chelsea were the better team. At the end of the day they scored and deserved to win.'
There was one man who stood out for Ancelotti as he spoke after the game, our captain John Terry, who kept Stoke striker Kenwyne Jones out of the game.
'Terry had a fantastic match today and his performance was very good,' said the Chelsea manager.

MALOUDA SCORES ON A MIXED NIGHT

Florent Malouda netted for France as they got their European Championship qualifying campaign up and running on Tuesday night.
The Chelsea man, who captained his country on Friday night, did not wear the armband no Tuesday as they travelled to Bosnia and Herzegovina, but he did score the crucial second goal with 12 minutes to go as his side earned their first points in qualifying, sweeping home after a rapid counter-attack, two minutes before being substituted with the game safe.
Ashley Cole excelled as England won 3-1 in Switzerland, the left-back playing the full 90 minutes and looking dangerous on the attack and solid in defence, laying on substitute Darren Bent's decisive third England goal with an incisive through ball, which the Sunderland forward smashed home to follow up strikes from Wayne Rooney and Adam Johnson.
Yury Zhirkov picked up a yellow card as Russia were beaten on home soil by Slovakia, former Chelsea man Miroslav Stoch scoring the only goal of the game at the Lokomotiv Stadion in Moscow, a venus Chelsea tasted in a friendly against Lokomotiv in August 2008. Zhirkov went on to play the full 90 minutes but could not help his side record a point.
Petr Cech, who sat out the World Cup with Czech Republic, was beaten by a header as Lithuania won in Prague by a solitary goal, the Chelsea man having an otherwise quiet night between the sticks.
Yossi Benayoun, captain of Israel, helped his side contain a spirited Georgia side in Tbilisi as they claimed their fourth point from two games, the Chelsea man missing a late chance to snatch the game's only goal. Former Blue Ben Sahar also played for Israel.
At Under 21 level, Daniel Sturridge played 78 minutes for England as they recorded a 3-0 win over Lithuania at Colchester, goals coming courtesy of Danny Welbeck (2) and Marc Albrighton, which guarantees Stuart Pearce's side a play-off place in European Championship qualifying. On loan Chelsea men Michael Mancienne (captain) and Ryan Bertrand both played the full 90 minutes, while Jack Cork, with Burnley, replaced Sturridge with 12 minutes remaining.
Sturridge came close with an early opportunity before seeing another goal ruled out for offside.
Conor Clifford played 79 minutes in Ireland's 1-0 defeat to Turkey, while Fabio Borini was an unused sub for Italy as they secured their place in the play-offs via a 1-0 win over Wales.
Slobodan Rajkovic, on loan at Vitesse Arnhem, played the full game as captain for Serbia Under 21s in their 3-1 win away at Cyprus, and was booked with 16 minutes to go. Despite their victory they, like Ireland, do not qualify for the play-offs, unlike Italy after they beat Wales.

REACTION: MARVELLOUS MICHAEL

Carlo Ancelotti praised Michael Essien for his huge contribution on another happy away day in east London.
Two headers from the Ghanaian either side of a lucky Salomon Kalou strike rendered Scott Parker's late volley for West Ham academic as we made it four Barclays Premier League wins from four in 2010/11, condemning our opposition to their fourth straight defeat.

The midfielder missed the second half of last season with a serious knee injury, but returned to full fitness for this campaign and Ancelotti believes Chelsea are reaping the benefits.
'We missed Essien last season because he is one of the top midfielders in the world. He came back and we are happy and we hope he can maintain this level of play,' the Italian said following our 3-1 win at Upton Park.
'Now he is fit, we have to pay attention because he is playing again all the games from the start of the season, he scored today and he is a fantastic jumper. I hope he maintains his condition for as long as possible.'
Assessing the match, in which we were 2-0 up inside 20 minutes thanks to a combination of strong play and mistakes by our hosts, Ancelotti believes we did well to hold out and kill the game off.
'We spent a lot of energy, we were lucky at the start of the game to go 2-0 up, but it was very difficult because West Ham didn't lose confidence and tried to create chances,' he explained.
'It was not easy. The game finished when we scored the third goal, before it was a difficult game for us, in the second half West Ham put a lot of pressure on us and we have to look at their performance.
'They played good football, defensively we had a good performance but offensively could do better.'
Ancelotti's opposite number, former Chelsea manager Avram Grant, echoed those sentiments.
'I think it is not easy when you concede the first goal,' said the Israeli. 'We reacted well and then the second goal. It is amazing because Chelsea didn't create any chances in the first half, we created three big chances, dominated the game... but we didn't score.
'Unfortunately we lost but we have a lot of positive things to take and if we continue like this I think it will be good. After 25 or 30 games I don't think we will be in this position.'
Now we look ahead to our first European encounter of the campaign, a trip to Slovakian champions MSK Zilina on Wednesday evening. Ancelotti is hopeful that Frank Lampard will make a return to the line-up, while conceding that John Terry could be a doubt after being withdrawn this afternoon.
'John Terry took a knock on his rib, and we will look in the next day and [see] if he is fit for Wednesday,' the manager said. 'I don't think it is broken, he took a knock in the first half, played again for 60 minutes and had pain at the end of the game so I took him out.
'Lampard is the same, I think he will train tomorrow and Monday and we will take a decision for Wednesday.
'We don't know a lot about Zilina, they are a new team, and for this reason we have to pay more attention. I will change the line-up because I want to give rest to some players, and I will decide in the next days,' Ancelotti reported.
We travel to Slovakia on Tuesday, when Ancelotti will once again meet the media and outline his plans for our first Group F match.

MATCH REPORT: MSK ZILINA 1 CHELSEA 4

Chelsea went within one goal of the 150 mark in the Champions League with a comfortable win over Zilina to start our European campaign tonight.
A Nicolas Anelka brace added to Michael Essien's opener before Daniel Sturridge made it four in the second half on a night when Josh McEachran made his debut.
