The hazard of a profession reared its ugly side in the ancient commercial city of Kano in the wee hours of Monday when unidentified assassins murdered in gruesome circumstance, a staff of the State Security Service and four members of his family in Kano.
The victim, Alhaji Garba Bello, 49, who hails from Hadejia in Jigawa state met his untimely death together with his wife Habiba, 38, and his three children, namely Hafsat,19, Khalifa, 17, and Murja, six. They were hacked down by unidentified assassins that stormed his residence at Kundila Housing Estate, off Zoo Road in Kano metropolis at about 1:30am
Bello, who is said to have begun his career from Kano, was killed along with members of his immediate family by the assassins whom sources disclosed might have trailed him all the way from his base in Sokoto State.
Some of his neighbours confirmed at the scene of the incident that the seven unidentified killers armed with guns, knives and other dangerous weapons murdered their victims.
However, two of his sons were lucky to have escaped. They are Bello Garba (21), a student of Kano State University of Science and Technology, Wudil, Kano who is presently in the custody of Kano office of the security service and Farouk Garba, who sustained serious injuries.
Farouk is currently receiving treatment in a Kano hospital under security watch.
Our correspondent gathered that Bello, who was serving in the SSS Medical Department in Sokoto, was on sick leave having been ill for sometime now.
A security source explained that, “This is a clear case of assassination. We have checked the whole house and nothing was removed from there. A day before yesterday, he complained that an unknown person locked him inside.
“When he came out for prayers and discovered that his gate had been locked from outside, he had to make calls for somebody to break the gate” for them to come out for prayers,” a security source disclosed.”
Our correspondent also learnt that in January this year, while the late SSS official and his family were in Sokoto, armed robbers invaded his house and stole all his belongings.
The motive behind the assassination is yet to be revealed, but there are indications that the late Bello might have been in a running battle with unknown persons over somes issues.
Reacting to the incident, Kano State Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Gana, said, “It is a clear case of an act of assassins. We were there this morning and preliminary investigation has indicated that it was not a robbery attack.
“Two of his children escaped from the assassins. We are going to interrogate them to find out whether they can give us any clue. Investigation is still on and no arrest has been made yet.”
