The Lagos Junior League

History & Profile

The Lagos Junior League is a regulation football league initiated for U-20 students, who have either passed through or are presently in the Lagos State School System. The league was jointly incorporated in 2010 by the 20 Local Government Areas (LGs), 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) and the State Government with an equity investment of N1 Billion, each LG/LCDA contributing 1.5% and the State contributing 14.5%.

The initiative was strategically conceived by the Lagos State Government with hindsight to;

    * Identify, inspire and nurture latent talents to Stardom
    * Serve as a launch pad for students for professionalism in sports
    * Showcase & Expose untapped talents to the rest of the world
    * Orientate youths, redirect their goals and visions for sustainable self development
    * Promote  youth development and empowerment
    * Contribute to the pool of qualitative & professional football players in the country
    * Promote active sport participation and improve social recreation/ entertainment for the populace

The League which is being structured like the English Premier League ‘EPL’, where teams are based on cities will comprise of 57 teams representing each of the LGs & LCDAs in Lagos State. The 57 teams representing the 57 LGs and LCDAs of Lagos State will participate in the league with the option of 3 privately owned teams subscribing to the charter of the league. The 58 teams participating in the Play offs will crystallize into the categorization below;

Plans are underway for a Lagos Sports TV (LAGSPORT TV) channel that will broadcast the League live to Nigerians and the World via strategic partnership with a digital satellite TV provider. Over 392 matches are expected to be played per season at 17 matches per week. The League is also positioned to attract and generate investment from the public and private sector; tremendous opportunities exist for revenue partners and investors to leverage. Hence major sources of revenues for driving the Junior League include Marketing Rights, Sponsorships, Corporate Social Responsibility Initiatives, Good Causes Clause from Lottery, Branding, and Advertising, among others.
Management & officials of the league comprises of quality professionals trained in line with the standard of the world football governing body; FIFA. The Junior League is geared to harness and develop young talents for global stardom thereby enhancing grassroots soccer in Nigeria. It will also help develop sports infrastructures and empower youths.

 

Impacts of the Junior League will include but not limited to;

    * The development of a quality football league and a developmental programme to produce and nurture talents for Nigeria and the World
    * The direct empowerment to over 1,740 young people and 1, 500 support service professionals
    * The development of at least one standard stadium in each of the 57 local governments within a span of three years
    * A thriving transfer window providing income for thousands of talented players
    * A veritable platform for a Sport Science Institute as endorsed by FIFA (F-MARC)
