Former Head of State and Presidential aspirant, General Mohammadu Buhari has commended the Senate for taking side with the people by throwing out the “selfish” amendment bill forwarded to the National Assembly by President Goodluck Jonathan, saying the proposal was a reflection of the deceit with which the executive has been ruling the nation.

Buhari who is angling to contest the 2011 presidency on the platform of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) said the thought of inclusion of the provision allowing appointed political office holders to vote as delegates during party congresses, hiding under the demand by the Electoral body’s request for time extension shows that President Jonathan is weak on leadership skill.

The Senate had on Wednesday thrown out the already gazette bill which sought to amend the 2010 Electoral Act, providing for time extension for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). However, the President included request for other amendments, the contentious one, which has been described as ‘toxic provision’ was the section 87 (Cool which would have allowed for the a political appointee to be an automatic voting delegate at the convention or congress of a party for the purpose of nomination of a candidate to fly the flag of the party at elections.

Speaking through the National Publicity Secretary of the CPC, Dennis Aghanya, the former Head of State argued that it was wrong for the president to have made such a proposal when he knew it was undemocratic and would affect not only the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) but other parties. Buhari expressed disappointment that President Jonathan who is also seeking votes from Nigerians could because of his own selfish reason of wanting to outdo his opponents in his party, propose an amendment capable of reversing the gains of the nation’s democracy.

He described the President’s attempt as a desperation, which is despicable, adding that the development was instructive for Nigerians to watch out and ensure such desperate politician dopes not lead the nation in 2011.
The CPC Chieftain argued that for the Senate to throw out the president bill without blinking an eye lid showed that he is not in control, nor capable of controlling his party let alone Nigeria.

Said he; it shows a president that is not in control, and is not capable of leading Nigeria. It shows a President and a party that has no programme for the people. The government of the PDP has shown to Nigerians that its leadership is for personal interest and not for the people.

“President Jonathan is not fit to rule Nigeria, how can you present an amendment for an electoral body for the nation and insert a self- serving provision. It shows a leadership without planning. Why didn’t he include it initially if wasn’t for personal gain? He acts before he thinks and is unfortunate he is the president. This is the same way he made hasty and unwarranted comments in the wake of the bomb blasts on the National day. They don’t think ahead and what that tells us is that the government is not organized.
