The Premier League is the most competitive football division in the world, and it’s naturally, therefore, been and continues to be the home of the best footballers. Ultimately, not all the best players hail from England, so footballers from abroad regularly ply their trade in England’s top-flight, with a number of them hitting the heights from Nigeria over the years.
Kanu
We’re kicking off this list with Kanu, one of the most decorated footballers in Nigeria’s history. And, as everyone will know, Kanu is also one of the most recognisable because of his height. While playing for Arsenal, Kanu, a tall striker who was skilled with the ball at his feet, won the Premier League title, was a part of the famous Invincibles team, which went unbeaten across a season, and he also scored a stunning fifteen-minute hat trick after coming off the bench. Kanu also played for Portsmouth.
Jay-Jay Okocha
When Jay-Jay Okocha arrived in the Premier League, he proved to be an instant hit. Manager Sam Allardyce had taken somewhat of a gamble, because he went down the path of signing decorated older players, but bringing Okocha to Bolton worked a treat. His skills, for which he is famed, dazzled and baffled even some of the Premier League’s best, and he scored some memorable goals too. Okocha was very much a part of one of the best periods in Bolton’s history and one that supporters still talk about to this day. Nowadays, the player likes to spend his time endorsing different online casinos, whilst enjoying his very own nightclub called Club 10.
John Obi-Mikel
Tough tackling midfielder John Obi-Mikel was linked with a switch to the Premier League from a very young age. And, while he did end up signing for Chelsea and going on to win plenty of silverware, they weren’t the first team in England’s top flight that Mikel penned an agreement with. In fact, Manchester United had a deal in place with Mikel, which Chelsea bought him out of to secure him for themselves. And what a fantastic decision it proved to be, with Mikel a reliable force in the middle of the park for years. Chelsea fans long associate Mikel with the initial glory days when they won league titles and even the Champions League.
Yakubu
Yakubu is a player that everyone who follows English football will have heard of, but many will know him as The Yak. After a hugely successful spell with Portsmouth, where he remains the club’s top Premier League goalscorer of all time, the striker also represented Middlesbrough, Everton, Leicester and Blackburn, scoring goals wherever he went. Yakubu not only possessed fantastic physical attributes that allowed him to wreak havoc, but he was also an accomplished finisher. So, it’s no surprise that as far as African players in English football go, he managed to reach the century mark, an achievement only matched by Didier Drogba. His move to Everton was a deal worth over £11 million, which showed just how much of a talent he was at the time too.
