In a sudden and tragic development, Hon Jumi Odaji, a candidate from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) seeking re-election as councillor for Bowen Ward 20 (Agbassa & Alders Town) in Warri South Local Government Area, has passed away. Odaji was vying for a second term in the upcoming local government council elections scheduled for July 13 in Delta State.
Odaji's death occurred on Thursday night, though the cause remains unknown at the time of this report.
In related news, a group of prominent Deltans has filed a lawsuit at the Federal High Court in Asaba, seeking to halt the Delta State Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC) from conducting the July 13 elections in certain council areas. The plaintiffs, Denbo-Denbofa Oweikpodor, Comrade Sheriff Mulade, Arc Sylvester Adowei, Emmanuel Igetei, and Midwest Kukuru Esq., are advocating on behalf of themselves and “the Ijaw people of the three LGAs of Warri Federal Constituency of Delta State.”
In the suit, numbered FHC/ASB/CS/87/2024, they demand a declaration that DSIEC cannot proceed with the council elections in Warri South, Warri South-West, and Warri North Local Government Areas without the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) establishing fresh polling units. This demand is based on the Supreme Court judgment in Appeal No. S/413/2016: HON. GEORGE U. TIMINIMI & 9 ORS v. INEC, delivered on December 2, 2022.
As the local government elections approach, these developments add a layer of uncertainty and concern within the political landscape of Delta State.
