Two men suspected of engaging in fraudulent schemes were apprehended by vigilant youths in Okwu Olokoro, Umuahia South Local Government Area of Abia State on Saturday. The suspects, identified as Uche Harrison, 42, and Lucky Nwohu, were caught red-handed attempting to defraud another victim.
The duo, who claimed to be from Ntigha in Isiala Ngwa North LGA, were seized during an environmental sanitation exercise at the village’s market square. They had arrived on a motorcycle, which was also confiscated by the community members.
An Okwu resident told DAILY POST that the suspects aroused suspicion when they were seen moving around the village. “Some villagers noticed their unfamiliar presence and raised concerns,” the source said. “The suspects tried to flee, but their motorcycle broke down at the market square, leading to their capture by the youths.”
Initially, the suspects claimed they were searching for a place to eat. However, upon questioning, they admitted to using deceptive tactics to steal money from unsuspecting individuals. During further interrogation, the suspects revealed that they had previously defrauded Mrs. Okwuchi Ihezie from Ihete Uboma, Imo State, of N350,000.
Mrs. Ihezie, who had been scammed two months ago, arrived in Okwu Olokoro upon hearing of the suspects' arrest. She explained to the youths that the fraudsters had tricked her with a bogus business proposal.
Following their capture, the suspects were handed over to the Zone 9 Command of the Nigerian Police in Umuahia by Mr. Bartholomew Nwaeze, Chairman of the Okwu community. Nwaeze issued a stern warning to criminals, urging them to avoid the community.
