The Nigerian Airforce has announced the successful destruction of 13 illegal refining sites and 10 overhead tanks in a targeted operation near Obuzor and Okoloma, aimed at curbing the ongoing illegal refining activities in the Niger Delta region.
According to Air Vice Marshal Edward Gabkwet, Director of Public Relations and Information, the Air Component of Operation Delta Safe carried out the mission on Sunday as part of an intensified aerial patrol initiative. The operation, conducted along the Imo River, led to the discovery and subsequent destruction of numerous active illegal refining sites that were exploiting the region's challenging terrain.
"In what is arguably one of our most successful operations in the area, several illegal refining sites were identified along the Imo River near Obuzor and Okoloma," Gabkwet stated. "These sites, totaling 13, were destroyed after the aircraft engaged with the weapons on board. Additionally, several overhead tanks connected to reservoirs and numerous gallons of illegally refined products were also eliminated."
During the operation, the Airforce team extended their patrol downstream, where they observed a 6-tyre tipper truck along the riverbank, with four canoes in the process of loading illegal products onto the truck. Upon sighting the aircraft, the criminals fled the scene, leaving the truck and canoes, which were subsequently destroyed by the Airforce.
The patrol also covered the Trans Niger Pipeline from Rumuekpe-Nkpoku to Bonny, including key points such as the Bodo trunk line and the Nkpoku-New Ebubu Trunkline. No further unusual activities were observed during the extended patrol.
This operation marks a significant step in the Nigerian Airforce's ongoing efforts to combat illegal refining activities in the Niger Delta, contributing to the broader goal of stabilizing the region and protecting the nation's resources.
