In a significant disclosure, Prof. Ibrahim Adeyanju, Managing Director of Galaxy Backbone Ltd., revealed that the company thwarted approximately 27 million cyber attacks on its systems during the 2023 General Elections.
Adeyanju shared this information during a courtesy visit from Malam Jibrin Baba-Ndace, Director-General of Voice of Nigeria (VON), in Abuja on Friday. He highlighted the company’s role in safeguarding Nigeria’s cyberspace during a critical period.
“Our security operation center is state-of-the-art, and it played a crucial role in defending against cyber threats during the elections,” Adeyanju said. He noted that the number of attacks surged dramatically from an average of 50,000 per day to nearly 30 million on election day alone.
Despite the unprecedented volume of cyber attacks, Adeyanju emphasized that Galaxy Backbone's defense mechanisms successfully protected the integrity of the electoral process. He also mentioned that similar spikes in cyber attacks were observed during recent protests, which were anticipated to be both physical and online in nature.
The company operates a comprehensive monitoring center that oversees its networks across nearly all states in Nigeria.
In his remarks, VON DG Baba-Ndace expressed interest in strengthening collaboration with Galaxy Backbone, particularly in enhancing ICT and cybersecurity capabilities for VON staff. He requested support for capacity building to improve fact-checking, protect cyber infrastructure, and combat fake news.
Baba-Ndace also pledged to promote Galaxy Backbone’s achievements and President Bola Tinubu’s Renew Hope Agenda through VON’s multilingual platforms, including Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, Fulfulde, English, French, Arabic, and Swahili.
