Bus Driver Kayode Accused Of Killing Policeman On Third Mainland Bridge Arraigned

The Police at the Adeniji Adele Division, Lagos Island, Lagos have arrested a commercial bus driver, Coker Michael Kayode, 43, and charged him before a Lagos Magistrate’s for allegedly using his Mazda bus to kill a police officer, Inspector Christopher Iziokhal who was on lawful duty on Third Mainland Bridge.

The police said that the incident occurred on 12 August, 2024 when the bus the deceased was travelling in to his place of work suddenly broke down on the Third Mainland Bridge inward Adeniji Adele axis.

The deceased was said to have alighted from the bus and started directing traffic to enable other road users to continue their journey during which the defendant drove his bus with registration number, LSD 816 XH recklessly and dangerously towards the victim and crushed him and he died instantly.

The police arrested the defendant and took the corpse of the victim to a Lagos hospital mortuary.

The defendant was charged before the Tinubu Magistrate’s Court, Lagos Island, Lagos on a two-count charge bordering on reckless and dangerous driving and causing the death of a police officer.

Police Counsel, Ben Ekundayo told the court in the charge marked TN/36/2024 that the defendant drove his bus recklessly, dangerously and deliberately crushed the police officer to death who was directing traffic on Third Mainland Bridge when the bus the victim was travelling to his place of work broke down on the bridge.

He said the offences the defendant committed were contrary to and punishable under sections 19 (1) and 51 of the road traffic law of Lagos State, 2012 and 2018.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges, and Chief Magistrate, M.A. Owunmi granted him N500,000 bail with two sureties in like sum.

Owunmi directed the police counsel to duplicate the case file of the matter and send it to the Department of Public Prosecution, DPPs office, Alausa, Ikeja for legal advice and adjourned the case till 19 September, 2024 for mention while the defendant was ordered detained at the Ikoyi correctional facility till he perfected the bail conditions.
