In a move aimed at promoting equal access to higher education, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced a significant reduction in the registration fee for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). The fee has been slashed from N5,000 to N3,500.

JAMB Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, revealed this decision on Monday during a pre-conference briefing for the forthcoming Africa Regional Conference on Equal Opportunity Access to Higher Education. The conference, themed “Advancing Equal Opportunity Access to Higher Education: A Call to Action,” will welcome participants from Ethiopia, Malawi, and Egypt.

Prof. Oloyede explained that the fee reduction is part of JAMB’s broader initiative to enhance accessibility and inclusivity for PWDs in tertiary education. He highlighted various measures being undertaken by the board, including the establishment of Specialised Testing Centres for PWDs, provision of free application documents for candidates with five O’ Level credits, and additional support such as transportation and accommodation for visually impaired candidates.

“The reduction in UTME registration fees from N5,000 to N3,500 is intended to ensure that PWDs have fair access to higher education,” Prof. Oloyede stated. “We are also providing free application documents and other necessary supports, such as transportation and accommodation, to make the examination process as accessible as possible for candidates with disabilities.”

Prof. Peter Okebukola, Chairman of the Joint Education and Outreach Group (JEOG), commended Prof. Oloyede’s commitment to inclusivity, noting that his efforts led to the formation of JEOG.

Mr. Jake Epelle, CEO of the Albino Foundation, expressed his appreciation for the new measures. “We acknowledge and celebrate those who advocate for inclusivity and support persons with disabilities. Their dedication has provided us with a stronger voice and has greatly advanced our cause in education,” Epelle remarked.

The new fee structure and supportive measures are expected to improve opportunities for PWDs, ensuring they receive equitable access to higher education in Nigeria.
