The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced plans to investigate allegations of discrepancies in polling unit result sheets from the Edo State Governorship Election held on September 21, 2024. This announcement follows reports of incorrect figures being inputted into the results, marking the second complaint received out of the 4,519 polling units involved in the election.
In a statement shared via X, the commission emphasized its commitment to transparency and accountability, stating,
As of 8:56 PM on Saturday, INEC had successfully uploaded over 90% of the polling unit result sheets to its Result Viewing Portal (IReV), with 4,259 results available for public viewing. This robust response comes as citizens of Edo State voted to elect a new governor to succeed the incumbent, Godwin Obaseki, whose term ends on November 12, 2024.
Edo State is one of eight states conducting off-season governorship elections due to ongoing legal disputes. The other states include Anambra, Bayelsa, Ekiti, Imo, Kogi, Osun, and Ondo.
INEC reported that there are a total of 2,629,025 registered voters in Edo, with 2,249,780 (85.57%) having collected their Permanent Voters' Cards (PVCs). Voters are poised to decide the next governor from a field of 17 candidates, although analysts suggest that the election is primarily a contest between three major candidates: Asue Ighodalo from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and Olumide Akpata from the Labour Party (LP).
