The Super Eagles, Nigeria’s national football team, were held up by Libyan authorities at Al-Abaq Airport on October 13, 2024
Their chartered plane was redirected to a city over two hours away from Benghazi, their intended destination.

This incident appears to be retaliation for Libyan players’ complaints of poor treatment during their recent visit to Nigeria for a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match.
Nigeria won that match 1-0, with Fisayo Dele-Bashiru scoring the winning goal.

The detention is the latest development in the growing tension between the two countries, fueled by Libyan fans’ demands for strict measures against the Super Eagles.
