Prominent Nigerian gynecologists have dispelled the belief that specific segxwal positions can influence the likelihood of conception, clarifying that factors such as reproductive health and viable sperm are the primary considerations.
Contrary to popular theories circulating online—suggesting that positions like missionary, doggy style, and spooning may increase conception rates by positioning sperm closer to the cervix—maternal health experts assert there is no scientific support for such claims. According to them, conception occurs once healthy sperm enters the honeypot and swims toward the cervix, regardless of segxwal position.
Professor Ernest Orji, an obstetrics and gynecology expert at Obafemi Awolowo University, highlighted that while myths surrounding segxwal positions persist, they are baseless in terms of medical evidence. "No specific segxwal position enhances or accelerates pregnancy. Even in cases where ******** occurs on the thigh, pregnancy remains possible if sperm reaches the honeypot," Orji explained. He also noted that, unless there is a blockage preventing sperm entry, the position has no bearing on conception.
Consultant gynecologist Dr. Stanley Egbogu echoed this perspective, stating that segxwal positioning is only relevant when attempting to select the gender of a child, not in influencing pregnancy success. "We do not consider position in fertility cases. It has no impact on conception," he said. Egbogu emphasized that pre-ejaculatory fluid can contain sperm, which can still lead to pregnancy, underscoring that even the withdrawal method carries a significant risk of failure.
The experts advised individuals seeking reliable birth control methods to follow established family planning guidelines, including contraceptives like oral pills, injectables, and intrauterine devices, rather than relying on segxwal positions.
