The Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris, has conceded defeat to his opponent in the November 5 presidential election, Donald Trump, calling to congratulate the Republican candidate for his victory.
One of Harris' senior aides confirmed that she spoke with the former President on Wednesday, November 6, 2024, discussing the importance of a peaceful transfer of power and being the president for all Americans.
The aide, who spoke on background, also confirmed that Harris will make a speech in Washington later Wednesday, the first since the result was announced.
Trump was declared the winner of the contentious election on Wednesday after securing a landslide victory against his opponent, winning both the popular and electoral college votes to become the 47th US president.
His victory marks a historic moment as he becomes the first US president to win a non-consecutive second term since 1893 when Grover Cleveland staged a return after a defeat as incumbent four years before.
The Republican candidate was defeated by Joe Biden, the outgoing President in the controversial 2020 poll.
Similarly, his return to power also came after a tumultuous period that included two assassination attempts and a criminal conviction.
