The National Examinations Council (NECO) has granted accreditation to additional foreign schools in Niger Republic and Equatorial Guinea, enabling them to conduct the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) and the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). This milestone marks NECO’s latest step in expanding its global footprint and offering its examinations to a wider international audience.
According to a statement issued on Saturday by Azeez Sani, NECO’s Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, the decision to accredit more international schools underscores the Council’s commitment to enhancing its global presence and making Nigerian-standard examinations accessible to students beyond the country’s borders.
An accreditation team from NECO visited these institutions, conducting comprehensive assessments of their facilities, including classrooms, laboratories, libraries, computer labs, workshops, examination halls, and sports infrastructure. Following this review, the schools received full accreditation to administer both the SSCE and BECE.
“This accreditation is a testament to NECO’s commitment to providing quality education and assessment beyond Nigeria’s shores,” Sani stated. He added that NECO’s expanding reach positions it as a key player among Africa’s examination bodies, enabling students worldwide to benefit from its expertise.
In an additional development, Sani confirmed that candidates in Diffa, Niger Republic, are now participating in the ongoing NECO SSCE external examination. The UNHCR School in Diffa has become NECO’s first external SSCE examination center outside Nigeria, underscoring the Council’s commitment to inclusivity.
With NECO examinations now administered in several countries—including Benin Republic, Togo, Côte d’Ivoire, Niger Republic, Equatorial Guinea, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia—the Council continues to establish itself as a leader in educational assessments across Africa.
