A tragic stampede at the Islamic High School in Bashorun, Ibadan, has claimed the lives of more than 100 people, according to a grieving mother, who spoke out on Friday at the Adeoyo State Specialist Hospital. The woman, identified as "Iya Ayomide," revealed that her three-and-a-half-year-old child was among those affected and is currently receiving treatment for injuries sustained in the disaster.
This stark figure contradicts the police's official statement, which reported that 35 children died in the incident. According to Iya Ayomide, the tragedy occurred after a rush to enter the venue, triggered by a gate being opened by event organizer Oriyomi Hamzat. "People fell on one another as the gate opened," she said. "My child was caught in the chaos, and my neighbor lost her child as well."
The mother expressed deep regret for attending the event, stating, "I will never attempt anything like this again."
Dr. Adeoye Allen-Taylor, the Chairman of the Medical Advisory Council (CMAC) at the hospital, confirmed that four children are still receiving treatment for injuries sustained in the stampede, but assured the public that they are responding well to medical care.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage and grief, as the local community grapples with the scale of the tragedy.
