In a shocking case from Ajowa Akoko, Ondo State, a man, Monday Elela, has confessed to killing his 14-year-old son, Tope Elela, whom he described as the “black sheep” of the family.
Paraded by the Ondo State Police, Elela admitted to beating his son after the boy escaped custody from the State Security Network, Amotekun, where he had been detained for alleged housebreaking and theft.
“I didn’t know the boy would die when I beat him,” Elela confessed. Tragically, Tope was found dead the following morning. In an attempt to cover up the incident, the father buried the boy in a shallow grave under a banana tree behind their home.
Both Elela and his wife were subsequently arrested by the police. Elela disclosed that this was not the first time he had taken disciplinary action against his son, having handed him over to Amotekun and local vigilantes in the past.
The Ondo State Police Command used the opportunity to also parade 24 other suspects linked to various crimes, including cultism, theft, and violent clashes in Owo. Among them was 28-year-old Olamide Ogunseyila, who confessed to being a cult member, and Gbenga Bisi, arrested with firearms and ammunition.
Commissioner of Police Wilfred Afolabi confirmed that investigations into the incidents are ongoing, emphasizing efforts to address cult-related violence and other crimes in the state.
