Kano State has earmarked N2.5 billion for the mass wedding programme scheduled to take place quarterly across its 44 local government areas in 2025. This was revealed by the Commissioner for Planning and Budget, Musa Shanono, during the breakdown of the recently approved N719.7 billion state budget.

The initiative, which falls under the N91.32 billion allocation for governance and service delivery, is aimed at promoting social responsibility, human rights, and transparency while fostering a fair and sustainable society, according to Shanono.

Apart from the mass wedding programme, the budget also includes several key expenditures. The state government has set aside N1 billion for Ramadan feeding, N955 million for manpower and household surveys—including statistics on out-of-school children—and N1.05 billion for the rehabilitation of water systems, procurement of printing machines, and equipping the Government Printing Press.

Furthermore, the sum of N267.6 million has been designated for the production of Islamic calendars, infrastructure support, and Islamic Da’wah programmes. An additional N589 million will be used for security research, empowerment initiatives, and interventions to address street begging. Another N200 million has been allocated for procuring office furniture, maintaining the accountant-general’s office, and developing public financial management (PFM) software.

Shanono emphasized that the 2025 budget reflects a significant expansion in state expenditure. The final approved budget of N719.7 billion marks a 31% increase from the original N549.16 billion proposal submitted by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and represents a 65% rise from the 2024 budget. Of the total budget, N262.67 billion is earmarked for recurrent expenses, while N457.08 billion is allocated for capital projects.

The budget underscores the government’s commitment to social welfare, infrastructure development, and economic growth in Kano State.
