Scottish-Nigerian actress Carolyna Hutchings has spoken out about the racism and discrimination she endured growing up as a mixed-race child in Nigeria.
In a recent interview with *Arise TV*, Hutchings recounted her struggles with bullying in school due to her skin color and hair texture. Raised by her grandmother, she revealed that she faced discrimination both at home and in her academic journey.
"As a mixed-race person living in Nigeria, I experienced a lot of racism. My skin color and hair texture made me a target for bullying throughout primary and secondary school, so I had to learn how to defend myself," she said.
Beyond childhood struggles, Hutchings disclosed that she also faced racial bias in her professional life. Despite her extensive academic achievements—including an MBA, an MSA in international law, and a doctorate—she claimed that being an educated, mixed-race woman in Nigeria often led to criticism.
"I have several professional certificates from Lagos Business School and the University of Lagos, yet I still experienced discrimination at my workplace. In this society, when you are intelligent, beautiful, and mixed-race, you tend to get bashed," she noted.
Hutchings also highlighted the social stigma surrounding her as a divorcee, stating that she had to develop resilience over the years.
Her revelations have sparked discussions on racism and social bias in Nigeria, with many calling for greater awareness and inclusivity.
