A Nigerian couple has accused police officers in Owerri, Imo State, of unlawful arrest, assault, and extortion while they were on their way to drop off their baby at school.
In a video posted on TikTok, the woman narrated how she and her husband became victims of police brutality. According to her, their child was supposed to be picked up by the school bus, but since it was faulty, they decided to drive the baby themselves.
During the journey, she asked her husband to stop by the roadside so she could buy food. While they were parked, a vehicle pulled up beside them, and men who identified themselves as police officers forcefully arrested her husband without explanation.
Despite her attempts to intervene, the officers ordered her to follow them to the station. Moments later, they returned and arrested her as well.
Inside the police vehicle, she alleged that she was repeatedly slapped and verbally abused for questioning their actions, while her husband, who was handcuffed, watched helplessly.
The officers reportedly demanded ₦500,000 for bail, but after her husband pleaded, they settled for ₦150,000. However, even after receiving the money, the officers allegedly took away their car key and left.
Determined to reclaim their key, the couple hopped on a motorcycle and chased after the officers. When the officers noticed, one of them attempted to apprehend the woman, but she managed to escape and hid in a nearby car wash while her husband sought help.
In her emotional video, the woman condemned the police officers, calling them "thieves" and "wicked."
The viral video has sparked outrage, with many Nigerians expressing frustration over cases of police extortion and brutality. Authorities have yet to respond to the allegations.
