The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Western Marine Command, has intercepted a massive consignment of cannabis sativa, weighing 1,958 kilograms, with an estimated duty-paid value of ₦398 million.
In a statement released on Friday, February 21, the command’s Public Relations Officer, Lomba Benjamin, confirmed the seizure, describing it as one of the largest under the current administration.
According to Customs Area Controller Paul Bamisaiye, the contraband was confiscated at Ilase Sea Beach, approximately 200 nautical miles from the Lagos Anchorage. He disclosed that the smugglers, upon sighting customs officers, attempted to escape by abandoning their boat and jumping into the sea. However, officers successfully secured the vessel and transported it to the command’s base for inspection.
“Upon thorough examination, the boat was found to contain 3,793 loaves of cannabis sativa, neatly packed into 53 sacks. The total weight of the illicit drugs stands at 1,958kg, with a duty-paid value of ₦398 million,” Bamisaiye stated.
The interception, which took place on Thursday, February 20, at around 11pm, was attributed to the relentless efforts of customs officers in curbing illegal drug trafficking. Bamisaiye emphasized that this marked the single largest cannabis seizure made by the command during his tenure.
He further recalled that just two months earlier, the command had confiscated another 15 sacks of cannabis, containing 1,021 loaves and weighing 538kg, with an estimated value of ₦107 million.
Bamisaiye assured that, in line with established protocols, the intercepted narcotics would be handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further action. He reaffirmed the commitment of the customs service to collaborate with sister agencies in ensuring the protection of Nigeria’s borders against illicit trade.
