The Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission is set to arraign the Oyo State Commissioner for Commerce and Cooperative, Dr. Kola Balogun, and his wife, Gbonjubola, for corruption. The couple has since 2007 initiated a legal battle to prevent their trial by the body.

According to a statement signed by the ICPC’s Head of Public Enlightenment Department, Mike Sowe, May 6, 2011 has been fixed for the arraignment of the duo on three count charge of corruption.

While serving as a commissioner, Dr. Balogun was alleged to have abetted Gbonjubola, a school teacher to solicit for a share of the contract sum of N801,000.00 (Eight Hundred and one thousand Naira), payable to Bayo Trading. This, it was revealed, is an offence contrary to section 22 (6) of the Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Act 2000.

While she was a teacher at Queen of Apostles Grammar School, Ibadan, Mrs. Balogun was alleged to hold a share of a contract for the printing and supply of stationary awarded to Bayo Dele Trading.

The statement said the commissioner’s wife was charged for knowingly holding an indirect private interest in a contract made on account of public service contrary to and punishable under Section 12 of the ICPC Act 2000.
