Chigbo Peter Umeh was sentenced Thursday in a Manhattan federal court after being convicted in April following a three week trial by jury that included New York Giants owner Frank Mara.
Prosecutors described Umeh as the center of a vast cocaine trafficking network stretching from Colombia to West Africa and beyond that dealt in multi-ton shipments of drugs. He was nabbed in a Drug Enforcement Administration sting that was initiated by the son of Liberia's president.
A second person convicted in the sting has yet to be sentenced. Two others were acquitted and two others await extradition to the U.S.
