You are somewhat correct.  After death there is little that can be said because there is no repentance in the grave. However, those who know God and knew Steve during his life had a God given mandate to warn him of the judgement to come. The judgement that we all will have to face no matter who we are or what we have accomplished in this life. On judgement day the great and the small will all appear. Judgement is not just for the poor man who believes in God as some assume.  It is for all!  I PROMISE YOU that there is someone weeping with guilt today because they had the opportunity to warn him of the judgement to come and they didn't.

18When I say unto the wicked/unbeliever, Thou shalt surely die; and thou givest him not warning, nor speakest to warn the wicked/unbeliever from his wicked/unbelieving way, to save his life; the same wicked/unbeliever man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand. 19Yet if thou warn the wicked/unbeliever, and he turn not from his wickedness/unbelief, nor from his wicked/unbelieving way, he shall die in his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul. 20Again, When a righteous man doth turn from his righteousness, and commit iniquity, and I lay a stumblingblock before him, he shall die: because thou hast not given him warning, he shall die in his sin, and his righteousness which he hath done shall not be remembered; but his blood will I require at thine hand. 21Nevertheless if thou warn the righteous man, that the righteous sin not, and he doth not sin, he shall surely live, because he is warned; also thou hast delivered thy soul.  Ezekiel 3:18-21
