Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has asked lawmakers in the National Assembly to go back to school in order to clearly understand the difference between public and private affairs.

Professor Soyinka made this statement in response to a bill banning same-sex marriages which was recently passed by the Nigerian Senate.

He said, “The problem with legislators is that they fail to distinguish between personal bills and interventions in private lives. That is the problem. I see no reason why they should intervene in the private lives of adults. What people do in their bedrooms is no business of mine. It should not be the business of legislators.

“But at the same time, I think other countries who are pointing fingers should look inwards and see whether they also do not practise the same kind of discrimination. That is where I disagree, but I think it is important we learn to distinguish between what is a public affair and what is a private affair.

“The legislators need to go back to school to learn the difference before they waste their time with what people do in their private bedrooms.”

I agree on democracy issues and freedom but let's be brutally honest, Nigeria always hide behind USA and Canada et al to defend some stupid idea like the one Wole Soyinka is defending (gay rights). Why can't Wole Soyinka ask those gay people to learn how to create its own Apple product, Blackberry, Facebook, Aeroplanes, Space mission, Nuclear plant for stable electricity, robots and so many good things the USA and Canada and all other western countries are producing.Nigerians only emulate the bad side of foreign countries. ...last week an article was posted here that Nigeria is IMPORTING TOOTHPICK. If you can't enjoy 14years in Nigeria prison abeg carry your wahala go USA.

u'v got a point sir,bt with all due respect sir, same sex marriage is no more bedroom affair, bcs the word marriage means building a family, and 4rm group of families comes community or society,nd 4rm group of communities and societies comes nation, which means great families create a great nation, and it means the better the families are in a nation the less damage they take, the question is,wot is the effect of gay family on our nation?i guess nothing than putting the right thing at the wrong place in the name of freedom, which will affect our nation one way or the other if we allow it,nd if it affects our nation, then its no more bedroom issue or private,it's public issue now, sorry sir.i'm nt with u on this sir!
