A 35-year old man, Innocent Eze, has landed in police net for allegedly defiling 12-year-old orphan and pupil of St Silas Primary School, Ijan Ekiti, Gbonyin Local Government Area of Ekiti State.

The girl (names withheld) has just been discharged from General Hospital, Ijan Ekiti, where she had been receiving treatment, following the injuries she sustained in her private part, as a result of the segxwal assault.

The orphan, who lives with her grandmother, narrated how the suspect committed the heinous crime at about 3p.m. on that fateful day, after she returned from school.
Innocent, who deals in lumber is now being detained at the state police headquarters Ado Ekiti, the state capital.

Explaining how she was raped, the victim disclosed that she went to the neighbourhood to fetch water from the well before she was accosted by the suspect. According to her, Eze had wanted to use fetching a bucket of water for him and bringing same to his apartment, as a ploy to rape her.
But she declined, having realised that he was new in the area and that her grandmother would feel bad if she ran an errand for someone that is not familiar with the people residents.
“When he realised that I was not ready to assist him to fetch the water, he pounced on me immediately, carried me shoulder-high and took me to an uncompleted building where he lives, tore my clothes and had sex with me,” she said.

To prevent her from raising the alarm, and thereby attracting the attention of people living in the area, the suspect allegedly stuffed her mouth with a rag.
“He did that to prevent me from crying, while he was having sex with me. He didn’t want people in the neighbourhood to be aware of what was happening.”
The minor revealed that her stomach had been rumbling since the incident, adding also that her health condition had worsened.

“After the sex, I started bleeding profusely and he gave me N100 to buy drugs and fled. When I could not get up from that spot where he raped me, his landlord’s younger brother, Mr. Abdul Abu saw me and raised the alarm.”
The girl’s relative, Mr. Gbenga Omotehinse disclosed that the suspect denied committing the crime when he was arrested by the police. But he later owned up during interrogation at the police headquarters. Special Assistant to the Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, on Legal Matters, Barrister Olanrewaju Kunle, disclosed that three persons had already been arrested in connection with the offence before the suspect’s confession. He said, government would give the matter the attention it deserve, adding that it contravene the Child Rights Act and Gender-Based Violence Prohibition Law which has just been passed into law by the state government. The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Mr. Victor Babayemi, who confirmed the incident told Crimewatch that he was yet to get adequate information on the matter.
