The Labour congress and federal government are yet to share a common stand in the recent incident of increased fuel prices.

1. The NLC and various goverment representatives had a meeting at 5PM (GMT +1) in Abuja yesterday

2. At the marathon meeting attended by President Goodluck Jonathan, organised labour, the leadership of the Senate and the representatives of state governors, labour was given two options for the reinstatement of the N65 per litre price of petrol.

The first option is to revert to the pre-New Year price on the condition that the subsidy regime would be completely removed in April.

The second option is to allow the N65 selling price of petrol and withdraw 80% of the subsidy in March, meaning that petrol would sell for N120 if the current price regime remains in force.

3. The Labour Congress did not accept this options hence a deadlock.

4. Another meeting has been scheduled for Saturday for continuation of talks.

5. Labour insists that the strike and protest should continue until a final solution is reached.

Will keep you updated.

Labour should insist on a
phased removal of subsidy ;
20% yearly for the next five
years. It should also insist on
a full frontal attack against
corruption otherwise it would have failed in its protest.
Labour should also set up a
committee to monitor
utilisation of the proceeds of
the deregulation for
infrastructural development. Governance of this nation
should not be left alone to a
clueless, corrupt and
insensitive regime.

Not a bad idea...but how much attention would be paid to ensuring that such committee is 110% independence on the government at any level.
I therefore would suggest that such a body or committee should be headed by a none governmental organization and should be funded by fund generated from charitable organizations, thereby devoid of government or related body or individual involve in government.

Removing the subsidy is not a bad idea but we must plan for it first, meaning the refineries must be working and then transportation facilities must be put in place.

why cant they just cut off all the crazy allowance the senate and the house receive and use the money to fix the refinery. The president food allowance alone is N1Billion Naira for 2012 alone!!!!, when average Nigeria feed on $2/ day. Damn People are so hearless.
