Aluko Tunmise, a social media influencer, has been sentenced to one year in prison by a Federal High Court in Ikoyi for his involvement in a celebrity scam. The Lagos Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) prosecuted Tunmise on cybercrime-related charges.

The EFCC announced the sentencing in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, May 17. According to the post, Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke delivered the verdict on Wednesday, May 15, 2024. Tunmise, who styled himself as a model and influencer, was convicted of impersonating a celebrity in a scheme to defraud individuals.

The charge detailed that between January and March 2024, Tunmise posed as "Keanu Reeves" on Telegram, using the false identity to solicit financial benefits. This act violated Section 22(3) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015.

Tunmise pleaded guilty to the charge. Following his plea, EFCC prosecution counsel C.C. Okezie introduced EFCC operative Vincent Sunday Kwambuge to present the case's facts. Kwambuge testified that Tunmise was apprehended in March 2024 at Lekki County Estate, Lagos, after credible intelligence linked him to internet fraud activities in the area.

The EFCC's post summarized the case and the court's decision, highlighting the ongoing efforts to combat cybercrime in Nigeria.
