Our correspondent learnt that the allowances of the G-13, the lawmakers who plotted the impeachment of the Speaker in June, had been withheld by Kombowei.
Kombowei was ousted from office by a group of 13 lawmakers led by the former deputy Speaker, Mr. Fini Angaye.
He was accused of high-handedness, abuse of due process in the constitution of the House committees and inability to carry other members along.
He was, however, later reinstated after power brokers from the Peoples Democratic Party, including President Goodluck Jonathan and River State Governor Seriake Dickson, waded into the matter.
But our correspondent learnt that the settlement did not go down well with Kombowei, who after the peace talk, insisted that the plotters of his impeachment deserved some punishment.
The Speaker was said to have tampered with the allowances of the G-13, cutting them by half, an action that had generated tension in the House.
The affected lawmakers were said to have complained to the governor that Kombowei had refused to obey the provisions of the peace accord.
A lawmaker who said his name should not be mentioned for fear of victimisation, said Dickson invited the warning parties for a meeting in the Government House and pleaded with Kombowei to pay them all their entitlements.
“But a day after the governors’ pleas, there was a shouting match between the speaker and Angaye over the same issue. Without regard to the governor’s advice, the speaker resolved to set up a committee to investigate Angaye.
When contacted, Kombowei, through his Media Consultant, Piriye Jonathan, said it was untrue that he withheld members’ allowances adding, “The way the assembly is run, I am not in a position to withhold any member’s allowances.”
