A former photojournalist, Sam Adeko, has leveled serious allegations of medical negligence and unethical conduct against the management of Ikorodu General Hospital, claiming that his wife, Adejoke, underwent an unauthorized toe amputation without the family’s consent.

According to Adeko, the ordeal began in April when his wife sustained a foot injury after falling into a ditch. She was rushed to the hospital’s emergency unit, but what followed, he claims, was a shocking display of “inhumane and unprofessional conduct.”

Adeko told reporters that the hospital amputated one of his wife’s toes without informing or seeking approval from him, their children, or any next of kin. “Three days after the surgery, a doctor came with documents for us to sign, but by then the damage had been done,” he said. “They had no right to carry out that procedure without our consent.”

He further alleged that repeated requests for the severed toe and a formal explanation were ignored by hospital officials, and no justification was provided.

The situation worsened, he claimed, when the amputated area became infected and began to decay, allegedly due to poor post-operative care. “The doctors abandoned her. At one point, our daughter who was staying with her was denied access, and that emotional and physical support was taken away,” Adeko lamented.

The family said they were forced to discharge Adejoke and seek treatment at another facility after spending over ₦500,000 on bills and medications with no improvement. “It was as though she was being punished for needing help,” he added.

In response to the allegations, the hospital’s Medical Director, Dr. Taiwo Hassan, acknowledged that preliminary findings suggest the patient was suffering from a stage four diabetic foot, a severe complication often requiring amputation.

“We need to further review our records before drawing conclusions,” Dr. Hassan said.

Dr. Luro Sunday of the hospital’s surgical department confirmed that an internal investigation had been launched. “We’ve started a preliminary probe into the matter and will release our findings once the process is complete,” he noted.

Meanwhile, Adeko has called on the Lagos State Government and relevant medical authorities to launch a full-scale investigation and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
