This is just sad what the Nigerian Government is doing to it’s athletes!
Just a few days after members of the Nigerian contingent going to the Rio Olympics, cried out about the Ministry of Sports telling them to fund their trip to the summer games, our athletes who are currently at the 2016 IAAF World U20 championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland are also calling out the Ministry for abandoning them.
Athletics Africa yesterday caught up with the men’s relay team after they finished last in the 4 x 100m race which is when one of the members of the team Godwin Ashien said,
Quote
Nobody cares about us, right from Nigeria to Dubai, we didn’t eat for 3 days till we got to Dubai.
He added
Quote
As the thing is now. There is no encouragement from anybody. We have tried on our own to get here. No assistance from the federation. Last we heard was that someone at the ministry said they did us a favour to get us here.
Another team member Abiola Onakoya added,
Quote
All we get from coaches is beef. We trained ourselves for this relay.
Such A Disgrace!
Meanwhile with respect to the Rio bound athletes, one of the head honchos at the Athletics Federation of Nigeria is backtracking on the letter sent to athletes to find their trip to Rio.
In a new letter Bamiduro Olumide tells the athletes to disregard the previous letter as the ministry of Youth & Sports will issue their tickets.
This comes after the Sports Minister released a statement denying ever telling the athletes to find themselves.
SMH liars & thieves! Thank God for social media call outs which embarrassed them into doing the needful!
