The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN has criticised the attitude of some churches, especially in Abuja, in inviting secular celebrities and entertainment stars to boost attendance at their programmes.

The General Secretary of CAN, Musa Asake, condemned the new trend saying it would only distract people from the teachings of Christ.

He said rather than the ‘‘church learning from the world, the church should be imparting the world.’’ The trend
It is now common for some churches to publicise upcoming programmes and services by printing massive bill-boards and circulating posters, bills, fliers to announce the attendance of actors, musicians and other celebrities at such events.

At times, local and international gospel acts are invited alongside these entertainment icons to boost attendance.

Early last year, two churches, Action Faith Int’l and Prevailing Power Assembly in Abuja invited Nollywood star, Patience Ozokwor and Osita Iheme (Paw Paw) respectively to some of their events.

Also, last year, House on the Rock Church invited Akpopororo, a comedian, to its annual programme, ”The Experience”, also to perform.

And most recently, Firehouse Church, Nyanya invited entertainment stars, Ini Edo, Desmond Elliot and Osita Iheme in August and actress cum comedian, Funke Akindele (popularly known as Jenifa) in September.

Sir , i don't see anything wrong inviting STEVE CROWN and other gospel artist to come to village church and perform if i have what it takes to take them there....the life worship edifies the spirit more than the remix or tape....at least many would have the opportunity to see them live.......

they waited this long, not too late, there are boundaries and there is a message behind every institution, the church has no business with fame, its essence should be tied with what it was always meant for, it should depend on its foundation.

when i go to church i want to feel its foundation, some call it, doctrine, others call it bible message or revelation, when i go to the club i want to feel the sexy atmosphere, and when i go to a music concert i want to feel the artist. If the church mixes the other things to it, then it will lose its distinction and difference. Yet it has survived till now.

Some pastors are called by God but others called themselves. The mere fact that many churches have deviated from their core mandate as instituted by Christ has resulted to proliferation of churches without the raw message. What is the end point? Orchestrated crime and criminality even though many claim to be religeous.
