Olawale Olayiwola, who was in the company with his brother, Femi, and three other persons in the early hours of Sunday, when he was allegedly killed by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Olosan Police Station, Mushin, has told a gripping story of the tragedy.
Femi (also known as “Femi Best”) was allegedly shot and killed by the DPO, Muhammad Babamala, without any justifiable cause.
According to Olawale, “we went to a party together at Oshodi and when we were coming back, we noticed that a car was following us.

“We started speeding because the car was a tinted one and so we sped all through Mushin from one street to the other and then we burst out to Ikorodu road heading towards Somolu.”
He said when they got there, they saw that policemen had already blocked the road and were with guns.
To his shock, he noted that immediately they parked, they started shooting at them. His saving grace, he said, was that he bent down, so the bullet did not hit him.

On raising his head after the shooting had stopped, he saw his brother resting on his arms, in a pool of blood.
He pleaded with the authorities to make sure that his brother’s murder would not be swept under the carpet like others before it.
“My brother was just 31 years old and was married with a kid. I just want justice to be done on behalf of my brother,” he said.
Wife of the victim, Mrs. Tomilayo Olayiwola, said her late husband was her friend, brother and father – all combined in one.
In an emotion-laden voice, she said she had no premonition that that Saturday night would be the last time she would set her eyes on him alive.

She pleaded with the authorities to make sure that her husband’s death did not go unpunished.
Lagos State Commissioner of Police Marvel Akpoyibo told the deceased family that justice would be carried out.
According to him, “nobody is above the law and nobody has the right to end the life of another person as justice or illegally because that same law that applies to every other person will apply to you.”
Fielding questions from journalists yesterday, Akpoyibo said that it is not a trend for policemen to commit extra-judicial killings.
He said it would be wrong to classify this particular situation as a trend because of one occurrence.
However, he said while the matter was a peculiar one, the authorities would deal with it according to the dictates of the law.
Justice appears in the horizon for the family of the slain citizen as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adeyemi Ikuforiji, has promised to wade into the matter.
Ikuforiji made the promise when some youths from Somolu area protested the murder of Femi at the Assembly Complex, Alausa, yesterday.

Receiving the protesters, the speaker assured them that everything possible would be done to unravel the mystery behind the killing.
He lamented that the killing was a great pain to him and the assembly members, especially Hon. Rotimi Olowo, representing Somolu Constituency 1.
He urged the commissioner of police to move swiftly to bring the DPO to justice.

The speaker further informed the protesters that the issue would be debated on the floor of the house when it convenes.
While commending the courage of the family, he urged the irate crowd to remain calm and peaceful in their agitation, promising that the house would wade into the issue.
A motion was later moved during the house sitting that an inquest be conducted so that further action would follow.
