It may sound like a farce that a man with no formal military training confronted a gang of six armed robbers and yet, succeeded in disarming them.
Though a rare feat, it could have ended up a suicide mission, had his bravery failed in the event of the robbers proving their deadly stuff, which reminds one of the wise saying of the late Owelle of Onitsha and President-General of Nigeria, Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, that, “It is only a fool that would fight a man wielding a gun.”
Perhaps, because God was with Ikechukwu Egbo and he was not destined to die in the hands of the hoodlums and, probably because the robbers cups of sin was filled to the brim, the supposed victim, Egbo, became the Biblical triumphant Daniel that was thrown into a lion’s den but came out unhurt, while the hunters, robbers, became the hunted.
The incident took place in a provision store on Leshi Road, Ilaro, in Ogun State, where the middle-aged Egbo, could not condone the tyrannical swoop on his store by the gang of robbers, demanding for the proceeds for the day.
The six marauders besieged the store in one swoop and gave the tall order for the release of the proceeds in exchange for the couple’s lives.
The panic-stricken couple was left with no option than to usher the gun-toting and fierce-looking unwanted guests to the makeshift safe, a table drawer, within the store.
While the momentary stampede that followed the packing of the money went on, Egbo suddenly realized that only one of the invaders was armed, and he summoned the courage of fighting back, which led him to gripping the arm-carrying member of the gang and raised an alarm.
Apparently caught unawares by Egbo’s action, other members of the gang felt jittery and knew that their bubble had burst. They consequently took to their heels, living their held member to his fate.
A distress call was thereafter sent to the Ilaro Divisional Headquarters of the police, which in turn dispatched a team of anti-crime patrol men to the scene.
Consequently, the suspect, identified as Ganiu Wasiu, was picked up by the detectives. In his confessional statement, he recounted how they embarked on the mission, and gave the names of the fleeing gang members.
Only one of them, Adekunle Adebowale, a.k.a deadbody, was arrested, even as, according to the police authorities, efforts were on to track down other fleeing members of the gang.
Confirming the development, the State Commissioner of Police (CP), Musa Daura, said, “One Ikechukwu Egbo of 48, Leshi Road, Ilaro, in company with his wife, Juliet, reported at Ilaro Police Station that at about 7.00 p.m., on the said day, while they were in their provision store, a gang of six armed men attacked them and threatened to kill them if they refused to release their proceeds for the day to them.”
“The robbers were later shown the drawer containing the money. As they all engaged in parking the money, the complainant gripped the person holding the gun and raised alarm. Division raced to the scene, where one of the suspects was arrested. His confession led to the arrest of another member of the gang. Efforts are on to arrest the fleeing members of the gang,” the CP added.
According to the police boss, one locally made double barrel short gun and two live cartridges were recovered from the robbers.
Speaking with our reporter, Ganiu, who claimed he lives in Ibadan, said he was lured into the act by one Nnanna, now at large.
“On our way, I told him I was not feeling fine and that I needed to get some drugs. It was him that pointed at the pharmaceutical store for me to do the purchase there. It never occurred to me that there was a gun in the nylon bag he gave me to hold. In the nylon bag were his clothes. He went with me into the shop. As we entered the shop, Nnanna brought out a gun and pointed it to the Ibo guy that operates the shop. While we were parking the money, the Ibo man shouted thief! Nnanna and others ran away. Before I knew what was happening, the Ibo man had held me. When the nylon bag I was carrying was searched, they found the gun in it,” Ganiu said.
