Popular Lagos Businessman, Adeleke Arraigned After Being Accused Of Stealing Customer’s N1.4m

Adeleke Adeleye, a car dealer in Nigeria’s city of Lagos has been arrested and charged before a Lagos Magistrate’s Court, accused of  obtaining N1.4 from his customer.

Abdul-Afeez Abdulateef is said to be the victim of the fraud obtained from him under false pretence.

Adeleye was accused of collecting the money from the complainant with a promise to sell a 2005 Toyota Highlander SUV for him since year 2020.

He was said to have converted the money to his use and failed to provide the vehicle for the complainant till date.

After waiting for the accused for two years to refund the money or provide the SUV for him without success, the complainant petitioned the Assistant Inspector General of Police AIG in charge of Zone 2 Command, Lagos about the matter who directed his men led by Inspectior Nwabinne Pamela to fish out the accused.

The Police team arrested the defendant and charged him before the Igbosere Magistrate’s Court sitting at Ebute-Metta Magistrate’s Court on a five-count charge bordering on conspiracy, obtaining money by false pretence, stealing and conduct likely to cause breach of peace.

Police Prosecuting Counsel, Jimoh Joseph informed the court in the charge marked D/17/2022 that the defendant and others still at large committed the offence in April, 2020 at Awoyaya, Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos.

Jimoh told the court that the defendant introduced himself to the complainant as a car dealer and importer and collected the N1.4m from him to sell a 2005 model Toyota Highlander SUV to him, but that the defendant converted the money to his personal use and failed to provide the vehicle for the complainant till date leading to his arrest.

Jimoh further informed the court that when the complainant confronted the defendant about the money on 25 October, 2022, the defendant chased the complainant with stone for darling to ask him of the N1.4m.

Jimoh said the offences, the defendant committed were punishable under sessions 325 (1), 314(1)(a&b, 323(1), 287(1) and 168(1)(d) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Adeleye, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges and the presiding Magistrate granted him N250,000 bail with two sureties in like sum.

The Magistrate adjourned the case till 2 February, 2023 for mention.
