Human rights activist and the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2023 general elections, Omoyele Sowore, has lambasted an ex-militants leader in the Niger Delta, Asari Dokubo, over his visit to the Presidential Villa, Abuja last Friday.
Sowore on Monday said that Dokubo who during his visit to Aso Rock Villa, accused the Nigerian Army and the Nigerian Navy of being at the forefront of oil stealing in the Niger Delta, actually went to Abuja to report oil thieves to the real oil thieves.
The human rights activist and #RevolutionNow convener said this while speaking at the 10th anniversary of the Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF) and book launch of “Politics of Troubled Waters” edited by Nnimmo Bassey in Abuja.
He said, “I want to thank our traditional ruler for talking about oil thieves but he didn't want to mention their names. I saw Asari Dokubo; he went to Aso Rock to mention the people who are stealing oil, and I was laughing that Asari went to report oil thieves to oil thieves. The biggest oil thieves are here and not in the Niger Delta.”
SaharaReporters had on June 16 reported that Dokubo said the bulk cases of oil theft recorded in the oil-rich region were traceable to the Nigerian Army and the Nigerian Navy.
Dokubo had told State House correspondents after he met President Bola Tinubu behind closed doors at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja, that he pledged to fish out the elements behind the oil theft in the region.
He had said, “The military is at the centre of oil theft and we have to make this very clear to the Nigerian public that 99 per cent of oil theft can be traced to the Nigerian military, the Army and the Navy especially.”
He added, “Myself and my brothers have assured the President that there will be zero oil theft and vandalisation in the Niger Delta.
“We’re going to walk with an NPPCL and the IOCs to make sure that oil tapped is brought to zero.”
On security, he faulted the narrative that the military was underequipped to take on terrorism, banditry and militancy head-on, describing it as “blackmail.”
