Three policemen were shot dead late yesterday evening in Port Harcourt when armed robbers waylaid the convoy they were escorting. The policemen were providing security cover for Jerusalem bound pilgrims to Port Harcourt International Airport when they ran into the bandits who laid ambush along Eliozu, Rokpoku Road. The hoodlums opened fire on the convoy and the policemen responded.

After an exchange of gunfire that reportedly dragged for sometime, the three policemen were said to have died at the spot while some of the pilgrim were said to have sustained minor injuries. About five 50-seater buses and the police patrol Toyota Hilux pickup van were riddled with bullets.

During the exchange of fire with the armed robbers and the cops, many of the pilgrims allegedly ran into the bush for safety.
The men of the under world were said to have abandoned their nefarious mission and escaped into the bush, when they sensed that reinforcement was coming for the policemen.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in River State, Rita Inoma Abbey (SP), confirmed the incident, but said that details were still sketchy as at press time and that the matter is still under investigation.
