
Hundreds of women in Jos, Plateau State, on Monday protested the presence of soldiers in the troubled state capital. The protesting women asked the Federal Government, to, as a matter of urgency, withdraw the soldiers from the state even as security situation in Jos and environs remained tense.
The women, clad in black uniform, chanted war songs as they marched within the city, accompanied by security agents to the Government House. They waved placards, some of which read, ‘Soldiers have a hidden agenda in Plateau.’ ‘Ninety per cent of soldiers here are Muslims. Why?; ‘We want peace, not Jihadists soldiers’; ‘Soldiers must go back to barracks’; ‘Soldiers are hired killers’.
They threatened not to vote for President Goodluck Jonathan if he failed to heed their call for the withdrawal of soldiers from the state.
The women, who included the young and the old, marched from Gada Biu through the Yakubu Gowon Way to Government House, Jishe, where they waited for hours for Governor Jonah Jang to address them.
Meanwhile, a battalion of the Nigerian soldiers arrived in Jos on Monday evening to take over from the officers and men of the Special Task Force on security in the city.
The soldiers arrived in 10 Marco Polo buses and were immediately taken to the headquarters of the STF in Jos.
It was not immediately known whether the STF commander, Brig Gen, Hassan Umaru, would be replaced.
One of the soldiers told our correspondent that the new soldiers were from various formations in the country. He said that more would be arriving the state on Tuesday (today) to replace those on ground.
The arrival of the soldiers sent jubilations around Bauchi road where residents marched to the streets saying that a state of emergency had been declared in the state. The news spread quickly as residents quickly rushed home for fear of fresh outbreak of crisis
