In a bid to alleviate the economic strain faced by residents amidst rising inflation, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has introduced a groundbreaking initiative, unveiling markets that will offer substantial discounts of up to 25 percent on essential food items.

The announcement was made by the Lagos State Government on Saturday, as revealed in a statement issued by the Commissioner of Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotosho.

Dubbed ‘Ounje Eko’ food markets, the initiative is set to kick off operations on Sunday, March 17, 2024, spanning across 27 strategic locations, including Ikeja, one of Lagos’ bustling commercial hubs.

To ensure transparency and prevent any form of malpractice, the government plans to implement a voucher system for the pilot scheme. Independent payment solution providers and food vendors have been meticulously selected to oversee the process, offering real-time data for effective monitoring.

In a bid for transparency, the prices of essential food items have been clearly outlined. Notably, a 5kg bag of rice is priced at N5,325, with 1kg retailing at N1,065, while a 5kg bag of beans will be available for N6,225, and 1kg for N1,245. The prices of other staple food items will be readily accessible through various media platforms.

The ‘Ounje Eko’ markets will be accessible at 27 locations in Ikeja, six in Lagos Island, nine in Ikorodu, five in Epe, and 10 in Badagry divisions, ensuring widespread coverage across the state.

Governor Sanwo-Olu has urged all Lagosians to actively participate in the initiative, emphasizing the importance of cooperation with market operators and providing feedback through official channels to enhance the effectiveness of the program.
