The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has assured Nigerians that electricity tariffs will decrease significantly over time, offering hope for a more affordable energy future. Speaking during the presentation of his ministerial scorecard on Friday, May 24, Adelabu characterized the current tariff regime as a "temporary hardship" that will eventually yield "permanent gain."
Adelabu drew parallels to the telecom industry's early days to illustrate his point. "The electricity tariff might look expensive at the moment, but I'm optimistic that these tariffs will go down," he said. "We know how much we were buying SIM cards when telecoms first came. We know how much we were buying the telephone sets. But gradually, it scaled off."
He expressed confidence that the costs associated with generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity would similarly decrease over time. "So, it is a temporary hardship and it will lead to permanent gain," he concluded.
The minister's remarks aim to reassure citizens facing high electricity costs and highlight the government's commitment to achieving a more efficient and cost-effective power sector.
