In a disturbing turn of events, gunmen suspected to be kidnappers ambushed a group of travellers on the Irun-Akoko/Imesi axis of the Ekiti highway over the weekend, abducting no fewer than 18 individuals who were journeying from Ekiti State to Ondo State.
The incident occurred on Saturday evening as the passengers were returning to Ikare-Akoko, the headquarters of Akoko North East Local Government Area in Ondo State. Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants, armed and masked, launched their attack, forcibly taking the travellers into the nearby forest.
Toyin Ogunyemi, one of the victims who managed to escape from the kidnappers, revealed that the abductors had yet to make contact with the families of those taken for ransom.
Confirming the incident, Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanyo, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, disclosed that four passengers who managed to evade capture had reported the attack to the authorities.
"Four people came to the station and reported that while on their way from Ado Ekiti to Ikare at Oyinmo Camp, Irun-Ado Ekiti Road, they were attacked by unknown gunmen. But they escaped through the bush; a police search team has been deployed to the area," Odunlami-Omisanyo stated.
The abduction has sparked concerns about the security situation along major highways in the region, prompting authorities to intensify efforts to ensure the safe return of the abducted travellers and enhance security measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
