The Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) has pledged to uncover the circumstances behind the mysterious escape of an inmate from the Sapele Correctional Centre in Delta State, vowing to hold those responsible accountable.
The inmate, identified as Paul Michael, reportedly escaped under unclear circumstances over the weekend, just a day after Raymond Neagu, the new Controller of the State Corrections Service, took office.
Michael had been incarcerated for the alleged murder of a furniture apprentice, Kelly Onojaiyefe, in Oghara town, Ethiope West Local Government Area of Delta State.
Ikechukwu Iloba, the spokesperson for the NCoS command, confirmed the escape and expressed bewilderment over how Michael managed to flee despite stringent security measures in place at the facility.
“The command is perplexed by how the accused managed to escape given the tight security at the Sapele Correctional Centre,” Iloba stated.
To reassure the public, Iloba announced that a search team had been deployed to locate the fugitive. Additionally, security across the state has been heightened to facilitate Michael’s recapture.
“The Controller is deeply troubled by this development and has immediately initiated an investigation into the incident,” Iloba said. “The Command will not sweep this matter under the carpet. The Controller General of Zone G has ordered a thorough investigation to determine the root causes of the escape.”
Iloba further revealed that an investigative team, chaired by Controller Neagu himself, has been established to delve into the incident. “Whoever is found culpable will be sanctioned accordingly,” he affirmed.
The NCoS has reassured the public that it remains committed to ensuring the security and integrity of correctional facilities across the state. The escape of Paul Michael has prompted a rigorous review of security protocols to prevent such incidents in the future.
