Thousands of residents of Makurdi, the Benue State capital, have been rendered homeless following a heavy rainfall.

The heavy down pour which was witnessed from Thursday through Saturday affected schools, churches, banks and other property and also destroyed residential houses.

Areas worst hit are: Jerome Hwande Street, Ankpa Quarters extension, Ankpa ward by Demekpe, Living Faith church Naka road, behind Customary Court of Appeal opposite first gate of Benue State University, Gboko road, Federal University of Agriculture Road, North-bank Makurdi and behind Modern Market.

Other areas affected include: Wurukum roundabout, Logo 1 Akpehe village, Idye village opposite zone 4 Police Headquarters and Kashio village along Otukpo Makurdi.

Though no casually was recorded in the flood, a resident of Kighir community along Makur – di-Naka road, Mr. Benjamin Apaa, told reporters that the devastation caused by the rain was unimaginable, adding that it would take the affected households time to recover from the damage done by the rain.

“We have suffered heavy damage. Our foodstuffs have been destroyed, many fences brought down by the torrential rain. My house has been taken over by water.

Another victim, Terhemba Adagher of Nyiman Layout opposite Shagba Guest House said he lost everything including food stuff, while Terver Ikya said that some of the affected residents had since moved out of their residents to safer areas.

She maintained that the 1.5 Km drainage constructed and commissioned by the Federal Government could not help as the channel was not properly constructed to empty water into the canal.

Already, this year’s flood technical committee led by the Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Mr. James Iorpuu at the weekend embarked on assessment of communities affected by disaster and recommended the demolition of structures built on water channels.

He maintained that Benue SEMA has earlier carried out advocacy to flood prone areas, appealing to the people still living on river banks to evacuate to safer areas.

On his part, the Commissioner for Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change, Hon. Ugwu Odoh said, comprehensive drainage design of the affected communities will be carried out, while the Urban Development Board (UDB) would demolish buildings blocking water channels.
