Daily Sun reliably gathered that around 2.30a.m. the robbers described by the police as ferocious, barricaded the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and were raiding night buses coming to and from Lagos.
It was gathered that the robbers had a field day robbing their victims for over an hour without police presence. Daily Sun gathered further that after an hour, a police patrol team from the Isheri Division stormed the scene of the robbery attack but the hoodlums opened fire on the cops killing three and injuring one. The robbers after wasting the policemen also carted away their arms and ammunition.
A police source who gave gratitude to God for not joining his colleagues who responded to the distress call, described the gang as formidable. He said the bodies of his dead colleagues had been deposited at the mortuary while the injured one is in intensive care in a hospital. He disclosed further that the police were working on the theory that the same gang was responsible for the killing of four soldiers attached to the OP MESA three weeks ago.
He revealed that fear had gripped the entire command “we are now afraid. The command is in trouble because, this gang does not fear even soldiers. The gang will just lay ambush for security men and wipe them out.”
He said the only solution was for the command to review its strategies in combating crime. Unconfirmed report has it that some civilians were also injured. Meanwhile, relatives of policemen on hearing about the death of the officers thronged the Isheri Division for enquiries.
However, the state police spokesman, Mr. Samuel Jinadu confirmed the attack but said that a policeman was killed and one other injured. Jinadu said that about 3.00 a.m, policemen from Isheri Division were on patrol along Lagos/Ibadan Expressway, unknown to them that robbers were operating on the road. He said the robbers opened fire on the policemen, who engaged them in a gun duel. He said when the smoke settled, a policeman was killed while another one was injured.
He said the robbers escaped with various degrees of bullet wounds. According to him, the force has beefed up security in the area to checkmate criminal activities. He said efforts were being made by the police to arrest the fleeing robbers. He advised both orthodox and traditional medicine practitioners to report anyone with bullet wound to the nearest police station.
It would be recalled that three weeks ago at the Afromedia area of Ojo in the metropolis four soldiers attached to the OP MESA Squad were shot dead by a gang of armed robbers who laid ambush for them.
