A 31-year-old security guard, Monday Etim Jones, has been arrested by the Maroko Division police for allegedly stealing a 3-horsepower Samsung air conditioner valued at N2 million from his employer’s apartment in Lekki, Lagos. The theft, which took place while the employer, Joyce Dike Udesi, was away, was captured on CCTV cameras without the suspects’ knowledge.
According to police reports, Jones, in collaboration with a gardener who remains at large, removed the air conditioner from Udesi's apartment and sold it. Upon returning, the victim discovered the theft and promptly reported the incident to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the Maroko Division, CSP Ganiyu Raji. The DPO quickly mobilized a team led by Inspector Peter Momodu, who managed to arrest Jones. The accomplice, however, is still being sought by the authorities.
Jones was charged at the Igbosere Magistrates’ Court with three counts of conspiracy and theft, with prosecution counsel Inspector Hafsat Ajibode stating that the offences occurred on October 5, 2024, at 5 Weston Close, off Admiralty Road, Lekki Phase 1. Jones is accused of betraying the trust of his employer by conspiring with the fugitive gardener to steal the air conditioner. The alleged offences contravene Sections 411, 380, and 287(7) of the Lagos State Criminal Law, 2015.
During his court appearance, Jones pleaded not guilty to the charges. Chief Magistrate Gbajumo Ayoku granted him bail and adjourned the case for further proceedings.
